Maintain security within an institution and oversee the health and safety of staff and offenders
Physically patrol and visually inspect units, yards, buildings, offenders, offender property, etc. to ensure the safety and security of the institution.
Perform inspections, searches, compliance checks, pat and strip searches of the offender population on a daily basis.
Observe the offender population directly and indirectly through visual, audio, and video monitoring. Observe and respond to obvious and subtle changes within the offender population as needed.
Monitor radio and telephonic transmissions between staff in order to respond as needed.
Provide escort and security for public contractors and visitors.
Comply and enforce tool, key, and equipment policies and procedures.
Operate control room and unit booths as needed.
Enforce institutional rules, policies, and operational memorandums. This may include WAC violations, RCW's, and potential felonious behaviors and violations.
Stabilize and provide backup in emergency situations for the protection of the public, stakeholders, staff members and the offender population. Situations may include and are not limited to fights, riots, aggressive behavior, etc.
Be exposed to chemical agents and EID devices.
Report writing, fact finding, reporting infraction based behavior, and evidence handling for potential criminal charges.
Under the supervision of the Correctional Captain, this position is responsible for the daily operation of the facility in accordance with DOC policies and Operational Memorandum's.
The daily operation of the facility includes managing the offender population and accounting for offenders institution wide; providing supervision and direction to Sergeants, Correctional Officers, and non-uniformed staff in their area of control; acting as the Superintendent's designate for the institution during non-business hours; manage emergencies and use of force situations following Incident Command System principals utilizing all available resources to include mitigating alternatives.
Complete reporting requirements, full review of documentation, and provide recommendations to chain-of-command. Investigate Staff/Offender grievances and complete tort claims against property loss as assigned. Lieutenant may be used as a disciplinary hearings officers for violation of administrative codes as required.
The Correctional Lieutenant provides concrete direction and a professional example to all Correctional Sergeants, Correctional Officers, and other non-uniform staff.
The Correctional Sergeant supervises and assists correctional officers as they perform custody work to ensure the safety and security of an adult correctional facility, unit, offenders, staff, and the public. The incumbent will assign posts and duties to correctional officers, give instruction and training, maintain discipline, and make inspections to maintain proper safety and security.
Key duties of the Correctional Sergeant include:
Performing custody work including controlling, directing, and monitoring the activities and movement of adult offenders.
Supervising and assisting in the transport of offenders, providing custody to offenders on authorized leave for medical appointments, court orders, or other transport.
Monitoring and assisting Field Training Officer, CO2s, and CO1s participating in the Correctional Officer Achievement (COACH) training program.
Recording and evaluating officer performance -Developing, providing, and evaluating curriculum and the delivery of continuous training. Taking emergency action and intervening in/controlling acts of negative behavior and violence by offenders by following prescribed procedures and guidelines, using verbal de-escalation, and physical and lethal uses of force.
Completing written reports, keeping logs and other records -Ensuring offender, staff, and public safety by restricting mail, inspecting packages for contraband, admitting authorized visitors, and enforcing visitor regulations.
