I taught 3rd grade for eight years at Jessica Lake Elementary, with one of those years being a 2/3 split. For all but one of those years, I was the sole 3rd grade teacher. There were a couple of years where there was a split teacher and we would team up for a subject, but for a majority of the time, I was self-contained with all subjects. I took sick and unpaid leave in January 2009 when my son was born (prematurely) and then took the 2009-2010 school year off to be home. When I came back for the 2010-2011 school year, I started working in Title 1 capacity as a part-time teacher. I also came back to the classroom in October 2014 and taught first grade, 3rd grade for the 15-16 school year, and 5th grade for the 16-17 school year. Then went back to Title 1 at the start of the 17-18 school year, as a full-time Interventionist.
I was a virtual teacher for Benzie Schools for grades K-2/3. There were a few changes with programming and assignments this year where I taught all of Benzie's K-2 virtual students and then ended the year with Jessica Lake and Betsie Valley K-2/3 students. As a Northern Michigan Virtual (NMV) teacher, I was primarily responsible for helping to keep the students and families on track with the Canvas Platform (Accelerate Ed through GenNet). I accomplished this by meeting with students 1-1 in Google Meets up to 2x/week. I was also a liaison and support for parents (i.e. Learning Coaches) to help them navigate the system. I kept a pacing guide, released weekly modules, graded weekly module work, and retaught skills as necessary as well as administered weekly progress monitoring and benchmark testing (NWEA). I am seeking other employment opportunities since Benzie School is not offering virtual education for K-2 students. I have been with Benzie nearly 20 years and believe it may be time for a change for the remainder of my career.
This was a time when our district was moving away from the traditional Title 1 teacher pushing into the classroom and going to research-based pull-out programs. I was responsible for analyzing classroom data, creating intervention groups, teaching small pull-out groups, and at times, overseeing parapros who assisted with intervention groups. I also scheduled and oversaw the Data Meetings up to 3x/year. I also assisted with benchmark and state testing. During this time, I was also chair of our Student Intervention Team, alongside our ISD team members and was a member of our Crisis Team (CPI).I left Title 1 for full-time teaching for three years in the classroom for the school years 2014-2017. At the start of the 2017 school year, I came back to Title 1 when it became full-time, and stayed up until the pandemic hit and became a virtual teacher.
