I am a BSW student who is attending the University of Oklahoma in Norman. I have experience with children of all ages, the homeless, and have gained knowledge while being a student in the social work program. I have learned how to interview clients, work with clients, talk about critical and difficult subject matter, and I have learned how to communicate with others who are different from me. While still being a student I am continuously learning about my career and how I can implement my skills in the future. I am pursuing my Masters degree in Social Work with experience from my bachelor education and my practicum site the Army Substance Abuse Program. I am motivated and determined to reach all of my academic goals. I am personable and resourceful to make connections for myself and others.
Kids Against Hunger, Tulsa Oklahoma
Volunteer and Advocate
While volunteering at Kids Against Hunger I packaged food to go into other countries. I also packaged and sorted donated food and donated clothes to go to downtown Tulsa. I volunteered for a whole semester while I was a student at Tulsa Community College. I would meet my mentor Vickie once or twice a week. My favorite, most memorable experience while here was when Vickie took me to donate the food to local food banks. It made me realize my little two hour volunteer shifts would help put a smile on someone's face, help them to be nourished, and change their attitude for the day. Now that was eye opening and such a heartfelt experience.
Life Church, Owasso Oklahoma
Volunteer for Life.Kids
While volunteering at Life Church for their child program I learned that I loved and wanted to help families. While volunteering here I saw different parts of the community join together. I would watch children of all ages and I would teach them lesson plans, experience art and new games.
Big Brothers, Big Sisters, Tulsa Oklahoma
For a year while attending Tulsa Community College, I was a Big Sister to a child located in Downtown Tulsa. I would meet her at her school and we would talk, play games, and take part in community activities. Coming from a different background of my little taught me many important aspects about why I wanted to be a social worker. This created empathy and active listening before I even truly knew what those skills were.
Lawton Food Bank, Lawton Oklahoma
At the food bank, due to COVID there were not many open volunteer opportunities. However, I had the opportunity of helping with the Senior Box Drive and their produce pop up. This is where the food bank donated food to certain populations and certain types of food. The produce pop up was very heartfelt to me, many of those who receive donated food, most likely rarely receive produce.
Tulsa Day Center, Tulsa Oklahoma
I sorted through food that had been donated and packaged lunches for the homeless. Being able to help provide a meal to my community that were in need was a great learning experience.
ASAP- Army Substance Abuse Program, Fort Sill OK
My practicum for 2020-2021 was at the Army Substance Abuse Program, located on Fort Sill. At my practicum placement I broadened my knowledge in the social work profession and in regards to the military population. Specifically I learned in depth on how drugs and alcohol affects individuals, families, and communities in a biopsychosocial sense. I especially have gained knowledge about how drugs and alcohol can drastically change the brain and its functions. I have accomplished many trainings that will serve me in my future endeavors as a social worker. I have learned about resilience in the military, as a social worker, and during a pandemic.
