I have a heart for the elderly. My passion for the aged is a legacy of respect and dignity, My mother worked as a physical therapist ina care facility. She taught me early on to honor and respect my elders. I have a gift in my ability to love and care for elders. I am perceptive. When actively reading the emotions, feelings, and reactions of others I will adjust my style accordingly. I display a presence that conveys integrity, competence, and leadership. I am poised, energetic, and confident in my interactions with others. I demonstrate resilience by remaining flexible under pressure. I maintain focus, optimism, and persistence in challenging circumstances. Maintaining integrity and respect for others in adversity and recovering quickly from setbacks is a high value of mine. Most importantly, I want to make sure this generation of elderly are cared for with dignity and love.
I trained under Kansas City Therapy Associates. My practicum at several different elder care facilities through KC Therapy and Associates helped me develop a broad view of elder care. The main focus at all facilities located in the Kansas City Metro area was the social welfare and dignity of my clients. My duties included: admittance, residents' rights, documentation, and working with activities to make life enjoyable. Additionally, I worked closely with speech and occupational therapists to acquire services for residents.
Richard, Roxanne's 84-year-old father, needed constant companionship due to his anxiety. Other duties included light house keeping, baking with Richard, mind-stimulating games, walks and outings to stretch his comfort zone.
Bathed and assisted Mr. Burks with personal hygiene, housekeeping duties including laundry, vacuuming, dusting, cooking breakfast and lunch 3 days a week. Other facilitated activities included games to keep his mind active, newspaper reading, and soothed Harold when he became combative. Implemented journaling of all activity with Harold for his family's review.
Facilitated Bingo, escorted residents, encouraged social and mental activity through reading, conversation, and physical exercise.
I provided public announcements of events on the facility-wide intercom system and directed programs and activities for residents such as Bingo games, exercise class, movie nights, sing-a-longs, birthday parties, sewing bees, ice cream socials, and benefit auctions. My experience of visiting and listening to many stories of residents, valuing their wisdom, is what inspired me to get my BSW to work with elderly!
