November 1, 2019 - Uniting of the Campuses
Focused on the opportunities that come with the potential uniting of campuses. There were five different sessions that will be offered during the day. Each session was a mini workshop that served as a time to discuss what we are already doing well on each campus and generate ideas on how to make our program even stronger.
January 24, 2020 - DIversity, Equality and Integration
Our focus was on a wonderful resource created by an organization called Pollyanna, which provides a free K-8 curriculum. Using the integration into curriculum of racial literacy, racial awareness, and conversations about race, they aim to "advance systemic change by developing stronger communities."
Three primary goals of their lessons are to develop and/or enhance students'...
1....knowledge about race as it has been socially constructed in the United States
2...awareness of their own racial history and socialization
3...skills for engaging in constructive conversations about race and racism
Lessons can be short discussions done during read-alouds or advisory, or they can be meaty lessons that fold into Social Studies or Humanities classes. They can even spark healthy conversations, whether formal or informal, with students, and especially during Black History Month. There's a little something for everyone!
