Summary

I have had many diverse teaching opportunities throughout my life. Coaching high school dance teams taught me to switch my focus from being a teacher, to being a mentor. Teaching in special education taught me the unique ability to recognized each students individual weaknesses, needs, and strengths, and be able to help every student succeed. Homeschooling my own two special needs children taught me empathy, a deep love for mentoring young adults, and how to find true joy in learning. Thus, at Snow College, I have found an amazing sense of arbejdsglaede (Danish for “happiness at work”), and wish to extend that to include teaching online at UVU as well.

Skills
  • Online learning platforms. I received both my Bachelor and Master degrees online. Therefore, I very much enjoy the flexibility and creativity of an online learning format and am skilled in LMS systems such as Canvas and Blackboard. Teaching during the Covid epidemic has also allowed me to increase my abilities with virtual and non-traditional teaching methods.
  • I am currently the only adjunct at Snow College to have created my own Foundations course for our unique GE Program. I created and teach a course titled Gender Stereotypes in Education. This course was conceptualized by me, after which I recruited two fellow professors from the Chemistry and Education departments. We now team teach the course. This course explores the theme of gender stereotypes. Students learn how the search for truth in each of three disciplines (Literature, Chemistry, and Education) can either be advanced, or limited by, our ideas of inherent gender traits, and our own self-understanding. All while instilling in students the great value that comes from being a life-long learner and from obtaining a Liberal education.
  • I consistently receive very positive student course evaluations. I believe my areas of excellence include an open and positive relationship with students, clear and engaging course design, and an ability to personalize each students experience to their unique needs.
  • Professional Development. I am currently working with several colleagues to create a flipped learning design for my Eng. 1010 class, and hope to extend that design to other courses in the future. I am also part of Snow's Foundations Assessment Team, in which we spend time assessing artifacts from the various Foundations courses in order to analyze to what extent the course learning outcomes are being met, and how we can help the program to improve in its aims of higher student success, connections across disciplines, and becoming life-long learners.
