Hard skills are technical knowledge and expertise you learned from work experience, education or training. Also known as technical skills, hard skills are concrete and measurable, such as understanding how to use a computer program or speaking multiple languages. Other common hard skills include management, data analysis, accounting, design and web development.
You will notice that every job description contains several hard skills. They appear in the job requirements or job functions section, and should be added to your resume. Mention them in your work experience section and list them in your skills section. Your resume is best with a healthy mix of hard and soft skills.
While they are less transferable than soft skills, some hard skills can be used to transition between career fields. An administrative assistant, for example, can highlight his or her knowledge of filing systems and scheduling appointments to land a position as a medical receptionist as long as they meet the other basic job requirements.
