Do your research online to find out what the market rate is for your job, in your city. If you find that you are significantly underpaid, it may be time to move on. Unfortunately, few employers are able or willing to raise your pay significantly once you're working there. So, if you feel you deserve a raise that's 40 or 50 percent, you should know that your current boss probably won't be able to provide it.
But, rather than quitting, find another job first. It's much easier to find a job when you have a job. So, before you throw in the towel, start your job search, and find a new job before quitting.
And, if the reason you want to leave isn't really money, see if there's anything you can do to resolve to true issue. For example, you may not have a good relationship with your boss. Is there anything you can do to improve that relationship?
Whatever you decide, do your homework – and be professional!
