Google is an employer of choice for the world’s top talent, typically receiving hundreds of resumes for every opening, which allows them to be extremely selective in their hiring. How selective? One of the most cited studies indicates that overall, Google receives over 2 million resumes per year, and 1 out of every 130 applicants receive a job offer. To compare, Harvard University accepts 1 out of 14 applicants for their incoming freshman class. It is literally 10 times harder to get into Google than Harvard.
Nevertheless, Google is always hiring, and their arduous hiring process should not deter you from applying if you believe you have the chops. Research the company and the role you want to apply for very thoroughly, as one of Google’s screening criteria is whether you fundamentally understand Google’s business model, and the context of the role. Determine whether Google is even a good fit for you in terms of culture, career aspirations, and company mission. Try to become a known entity to them before applying, and use whatever networking resources you have to receive an informational interview or get referred in.

Google has a very stringent hiring process and looks for specific characteristics in possible employees. To land a job, you need to showcase how you are a leader and someone who is willing to question the status quo. They want people who have specialized skills yet can also branch out into other areas. You need to show you are a lifelong learner who is always on the quest to find out more.
