Job Purpose:

The Surgical Tech Training Facilitator works with the Educator to provide and facilitate education and training for the Surgical Department. Provides orientation and in-service education for surgical staff. Participates in ST preceptor training and assessment. Assures the quality improvement of training activities, including complete documentation.

Major Accountabilities/Specific Job Competencies:

· New Employee Orientation:

1) Facilitates new employee orientation to the perioperative setting

2) Provides tour of department, sterile processing, and case-picClaire to new employees

· In-House Training Program and ST1 Onboarding:

1) Builds curriculum to provide foundation for successful transition to surgical tech practice.

2) Collaborates with Educator to develop individualized training to meet the needs of the department and the trainee.

3) Provides multi-modal approach to teaching best practice (i.e. discussion, skills-labs, quizzes, video review, and policy review).

4) Works with Educator to facilitate Trainee room assignments and designates preceptors.

5) Evaluates Trainee progress by direct observation and feedback from preceptors, circulators, and surgeons.

6) Serves as a role model for best practice and policy adherence.

· Experienced ST Onboarding:

1) Works with Educator to identify training needs by performing a gap analysis of experienced ST’s competency.

2) Collaborates with Educator to develop individualized training to meet the needs of the department and the employee.

3) Provides multi-modal approach to teaching best practice (i.e. discussion, skills-labs, and policy review).

4) Works with Educator to facilitate new employee room assignments and designates preceptors.

5) Evaluates ST progress by direct observation and feedback from preceptors, circulators, and surgeons.

6) Serves as a role model for best practice and policy adherence.

· Periop 101 Training:

1) Collaborates with Educator to provide a foundation for successful transition to perioperative nursing.

2) Collaborates with Educator to develop individualized training to meet the needs of the department and the trainee.

3) Assists in discussion, skills-labs, and policy review to reinforce best practice.

4) Assists Educator in facilitating Periop 101 RN room assignments and preceptors.

5) Serves as a role model for best practice and policy adherence.

· Ongoing Staff Education/Competency Verification

1) Collaborates with Educator to plan and implement ongoing education to surgical staff.

2) Participates in planning and implementation of initial and annual competency verification for surgical staff.

· Medical Students/ Physician’s Assistants

1) Provides an overview of sterile technique, surgical scrub, gowning, gloving, and traffic flow to non-staff scrubbing personnel

Sterile Processing Department Process Improvement:

Heart and Craniotomy Process: Consists of everyone's involvement to ensure that the most crucial instrumentation is turned over in a timely manner.

Decontamination and Job Duties:

Step by step Decontamination Cleaning Process and additional job duties for restocClaire of supplies along with par levels to ensure the work space is ready for the next person.

Front Desk Duties:

Job duties for restocClaire of supplies and equipment along with par levels to ensure efficient service to the floors and patients in need. Ordering beds, answering desk phone, cleaning dirty equipment, putting away supply order, emptying cart washer and putting away content, putting away instrumentation on autoclave cooling rack and giving report to relief person.

In-house Synthes Training Project:

Imputing of all in-house Synthes instruments and implants into SPM system. Worked closely with Rep to ensure instrument trays were set-up correctly and coordinated an in-service to ensure staff was appropriately trained and familiar with instruments and implants. Created an assembly guide for SPD staff to ensure instrument trays were assembled correctly and the OR staff had instruments for trauma cases in a timely manner.

Labor and Delivery On-boarding for New Surgical Technologist:

Training new staff members with Scrubbing, Gowning and Gloving, Mayo stand set-up Instrumentation, Suture, Medication Labeling and Aseptic Technique. Also simplified C-Hyst Instrument Trays to mimic Main OR instrument trays.

SPD On-Boarding Orientation:

Facilitate new employee orientation to Sterile Processing setting. Built curriculum to provide successful transition to SPD practice, Provide multi-modal approach to teaching best practice (i.e. discussion, video review, reading material and policy review), Evaluated training progress with direct observation and feedback from preceptors.
