  • Wolf Pecher of the University of Baltimore in an EPA Urban Stream Study of the Jones Falls Mill Corridor portion of the Jones Falls.
  • Responsibilities included preparation of materials necessary for field operations, the collection of samples, and the delivery of samples.
  • Another portion of the EPA grant study was working with local schools in demonstrations of environmental science in the Mill Corridor including teaching students both benthic ecological indexing for calculating ecological health, but also water chemistry and water quality issues that urban ecosystems face.

  • Supported water quality monitoring field operations and water quality data management and the development of the 2014 and 2015 Healthy Harbor Report Cards.
  • Prepared and participated in the routine ambient water quality monitoring surveys throughout the Gwynns Falls and Jones Falls watersheds, the Baltimore Harbor, and the greater Patapsco River.
  • Lead teams of volunteers in the collection of water quality samples and rigorous water quality data using instruments such as YSI and Hydrolab multi-parameter sondes conducted in the streams and from the Waterkeeper boat.

  • Worked on primarily two programs ran by Blue Water Baltimore: Ambient Water QualityMonitoring Program and Storm Water Outfall Monitoring Program.
  • The Ambient Water Quality Monitoring Program consists of scientists going into the field to monitor the ambient water quality for the Jones Falls, Gwynn Falls, Inner Harbor, and Patapsco River; duties consisted of collecting samples, investigating sampling locations for potential environmental hazards or contamination, interviewing any persons present at the location, producing mini-field reports, photographing monitoring sites, identifying local flora and fauna, and reporting abnormal conditions to the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, municipalities, Maryland Department of the Environment, and the Environmental Protection Agency.
  • The Storm Water Outfall Monitoring Program duties included trekking up to two or three miles in the field to observe storm water outfall pipes for potential sewage contamination, documenting locations of compromised storm water infrastructure with photos and GPS location, obtaining samples to verify water quality, and reporting compromised sanitation infrastructure to municipalities.
  • Outcomes: Gained experience with collecting, labeling, and handling samples to be delivered to laboratories and organizations.
  • Gained experience in calibrating, utilizing, and post-calibrating various monitoring equipment to collect and report data on ambient water quality at sampling locations.
  • Equipment utilized included using a turbidity meter, handheld YSI meter, hydrolab for large bodies of water such as the Inner Harbor, and field kits for testing for nitrates, sulfates, and other contaminates that are indicative of pollution in the environment.
  • Gained experience identifying local flora and fauna as well as identifying sources of pollution as well as understanding tell-tale signs of pollution in the environment that potentially harms local ecology and collecting samples/documentation as duties dictated.
  • Gained experience working with municipalities, state government organizations, and academic organizations to report data, collect data, and collaborate on interpreting results and delivering those results to proper channels.
