When I first started working for Varied Directions, I was in a menial position (answering phones, organization of data, etc). However, I was asked to make corrections to scripts and was quickly transferred to writing proposals and research. With time, I began traveling with the company in order to manage our work sites and write histories, research and backgrounds. These were my first experiences with writing professionally. I have since been told by professors and co-workers that writing is my strength. My love of documentation was confirmed when I attended a graduate program in Santa Fe, New Mexico and brought that experience back with me to work in Maine.
I was happily a stay at home Mother from 1988 until now. While my four children are all grown, the job never ends. I pursued my LMT (massage therapy) license after 2 years of school and owned my own business for several years while my children were somewhat older but still at home.
I am currently a senior at John Jay College. I will graduate in December of this year with a BS in Criminal Justice. My first degree was a BA in Communications and Documentaries for Film, TV and Radio. My goal is to use both degrees in my future endeavors.
I started this job straight out of college as the Assistant to the Producer. I shortly was moved to writing and collaborating on shoots that took place in various cities, including New York. I went on to a graduate program in Anthropological Documentary Film Making in Santa Fe, New Mexico. My mother's terminal illness ended my studies and I cared for her the last 6 months of her life. I went on to marry shortly afterward.
I am very proud to have worked on a number of films and commercials for Varied Directions. Most notable were films documenting the Marines, Life Magazine, and the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. The Summer Olympics Film was where I began to learn editing (after completing the program in New Mexico) and at that time, we worked in 16 mill. film on flatbeds. Clearly, this style of work is outdated but I think as usual, my strengths came from my organizational skills and my writing.
I truly enjoyed becoming an L.M.T. (Licensed Massage Therapist) and owning my own company. This work allowed me flexible hours so that I could continue to raise my children. Once they went away to school, I realized that I needed something more and allowed myself the luxury of pursuing a career that I truly love and understand. Criminal Justice and John Jay College have put me in touch with some amazing organizations such as Brooklyn Justice Initiatives whose role is to interface with the judicial system on behalf of juveniles who have committed non-violent crimes. Their work is inspiring since they work with juveniles at the critical time and development of their social skills and the impact of intervention is powerful and preferable to a correctional environment which teaches them how to become hardened criminals. My professors have encouraged me to get an advanced degree but I have chosen to be inspired and not tired. In addition, my age precludes me from spending the next five years in school and I believe that my energies are better spent in the workforce.
I consider my best work to be my children who are amazing citizens. However, my strong suits are my work ethic, my organizational skills, my obsession with current events and politics, and apparently my writing. I look forward to working with the amazing minds that I have witnessed within your organization. I try to avoid hero worship or mentioning names (Rachael Maddow) but they do exist.
I have 4 children ages 26-31. My husband has twin girls age 35. We are extremely proud of our children and have 3 PHDs and 2 Masters in the family so I am hoping we have done our jobs well. I do not regret one minute of the time I spent with them and the educations they pursued. My husband at the time was a full-time Attorney so the parenting fell mostly to me which is great because it was a job I embraced. The organizational skills I acquired during that time have served me well in the world and I wouldn't trade the time and experience for anything.
