Shell - Criterion Catalyst and Technologies Ltd - Houston, USA
  • Technical lead to win new business opportunities and retain incumbencies for Criterion in hydrocracking. Won units from competitors, retained units that went into competitive testing and retained all incumbent units.
  • Coach team members and help global team on items requiring experienced support (global proposal reviews, start-up assistance and test runs, etc.,) - Coached engineers to perform duties like unit monitoring, proposals, pilot test runs, process modeling and day to day troubleshooting.
  • Help customers to optimize catalyst cycle life, increase margins, optimize product yields through estimating tools, unit monitoring, proactive technical services and troubleshooting. Review/Prepare proposals with value addition, regular monitoring support and pilot studies. Example: Helped two incumbent units add in excess of 10 million USD per year for two consecutive years as value add from previous cycle.  
  • Service Shell, Phillips 66 and Valero units.
  • Review hydrocracker unit start-up procedures, provide round the clock start-up support and troubleshoot assistance where required.
  • Collaborate with Shell's R&D team, internal network of global solutions and criterion network  to develop new catalysts as well as improve on existing catalyst targets. Question/ Challenge R&D programs to help prioritize programs.
  • Study effects of feed changes, changes in operating conditions, product cut points and limitations (eg., hydrogen limitation) by providing short and long term solutions.
  • Review proposals/ estimates for regional and global team.
  • Deliver presentations in Criterion hydrocracking course / other Technical presentations representing Criterion including lunch and learn events.
  • Provided Several inputs to improve Criterion-Shell Hydroprocessing simulation model.
  • Lead a continuous improvement initiative program as well as actively participated in other improvement initiatives.
Technologist - Gas treating and sulfur processes
September 2008 to October 2012
Shell - Shell India Markets Pvt Ltd - Bangalore, India
  • Technical Lead for several Basic Design Package (BDP)s and a Basic Design Engineering Package (BDEP).Developed conceptual design tools and updated existing tools.
  • Lead projects for internal/ external clients in India, Australia, Singapore, Philippines, Indonesia, S. Korea, etc.,
  • Supported units in India and Shell Asian units outside including BUKOM (Singapore) and TABANGAO (Philippines). Help desk support for other units in Asia.
  • Conducted Amine quality improvement programs, Process safety assessments (PSA) and start-up support. Supported SRU debottleneck study using enriched oxygen and Euro-IV compliance (Reduction of sulphur in diesel) adequacy study and required revamps, etc., support for 3D model reviews, process safeguarding, cause and effect diagram, HAZOP, PSFS, plot plan and equipment datasheets.
  • Bukom: Helped get clearance to replace sulfur legs with sultrap to solve water contamination and corrosion issues.
  • Tabangao Refinery: STAR TREC project technicalities and clearancesLead Dry R&D studies involving: Design manual updates for SRU and amine units, short cut tool to determine amine plant size (based on feed gas composition and flow rate - building block tool) and H2S toxicity limit in amines for process safety manual (PSM).
  • Other Developments: Shadow verifier for columns and vessels for gas treatment units - Usually done by distillation group. Coaching junior staff on projects and project work including R&D activities. Coached three engineers. Several Proposals (conceptual studies) for gas treatment line-ups.
Shift Supervisor

Bahrain Petroleum Company (BAPCO) - Bahrain
  • Lead one of the four teams that Commissioned this $725 million low sulfur diesel production project.
  • Supervised a team of 25 Engineers/Operators
  • Safety reviews, P&ID reviews.
  • Developed and Reviewed Operating/ Startup and Emergency Procedures, Training and Qualifying Shift Operations staff.
  • Completed operation procedures for startup/shutdown/ emergency handling to commission a $150 million refinery gas desulfurization project.
  • Participated in Refinery Production Planning meetings. Meeting production targets, coordinating Maintenance activities and troubleshooting. Refinery Hydrocracker, Hydrogen and Sulfur Recovery Units complex.
  • Daily operations, troubleshooting, coordinating maintenance activities, participating in relevant meetings and preparing required reports/ records.
  • Performing unit start-ups and shutdowns.
  • Cryogenic Nitrogen storage vessels with steam and atmospheric vaporizers.

  • Unit process contact for phase 1&2 hydrocracker and hydrogen Units.
  • Conducted Hydrocracker-1 stabilizer section revamp studies to increase light ends recovery.
