  • As a Safety and Occupational Health Specialist at the Birmingham VA Medical Center I am part of a team that is responsible for implementing and managing safety, occupational health and fire protection programs throughout the facility.
  • I provide expertise on company policies, standard operating procedures (SOP) and regulations to peers and executive leadership.
  • I have the ability to plan and organize work assignments to maintain effective control of assignment and to accomplish expected results.
  • I conduct inspections to identify and evaluate potential hazards and risks associated with a wide variety of work environments and occupations at the facility.
  • Conduct safety and environmental inspections, fire protection inspections, fire drills and training sessions in general patient care areas, employee work areas and other occupied spaces throughout the hospital.
  • I am very familiar with the NFPA 101, NFPA 72, NFPA 99, NFPA 25, NFPA 70 and NFPA 80.
  • I schedule and perform fire drills on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis in healthcare and business occupancies at the hospital and at offsite clinics as required by the applicable NFPA and TJC codes and standards and hospital policy.
  • I am certified in NFPA 10 and authorized to conduct annual portable fire extinguisher inspections at the hospital and community clinics.
  • Periodically, I conduct portable fire extinguisher training with other departments to assure facility personnel are confident in using portable fire extinguishers.

  • I currently co-chair the hospital's Accident Review Board.

  • Perform interim life safety measure assessments prior to commencement of projects to determine if measures need to be implemented to protect hospital patients, employees and contractors.
  • Participated in TJC Survey and assisted with Plan for Improvement actions related to Survey.
