As a Rotating Engineer I work a twelve-hour rotating shift to provide 24/7 hour coverage where the prime responsibility is to keep a large hospital running around the clock. The work includes for the operations of the Physical Plant that has three high pressure steam boilers with a total capacity of 120,000 pounds per hour, three chillers that have a total capacity of 4,030 tons of cooling per hour along with the necessary associated pumping and air handling systems. Monitoring of the entire campus via the Building Automation System for discrepancies and taking corrective action as feasible. For backup power in the event of a loss of utility power there are seven diesel generators with a total of 8,750 kilowatts per hour along with their associated switch gear. There is also many other critical "hospital" related systems that have to be kept maintained and in operation such as a HVAC, refrigeration, pneumatic tube, nurse call and fire alarm, electrical and plumbing to name a few.
