  • 4-(1-hydroxyethyl)-benzoic acid was formed in a two-step process involving reduction and oxidization.    
  • The methyl group of the starting material (4-methylacetophenone) was oxidized to a carboxylic acid with the use of potassium permanganate.
  • The ketone group of the intermediate product (4-acetylbenzoic acid) was reduced to an alcohol with the use of sodium borohydride.    
  • Produced a high yield of a decently pure product, finishing the research competition in fourth place.

  • Recipient of the “ Dean's List Honor Roll certificate for Outstanding Academic Accomplishment" for 5 semesters (2010-2013). 
  • Recipient of the Augsburg Stem/NSF Scholarship awarded only to 5% of students (2012-2013).
