The orphanage takes in children that are victims of abuse, neglect and extreme poverty and provides shelter, food, clothing and schooling in partnership with Baja Vision Ministries. I thoroughly enjoyed leading educational group classes, helping school-age children with homework, planning outdoor experiences with them and serving as a mentor to the children.
The annual event is an initiative on reading created by the National Education Association. This event is designed to encourage children to read and is fostered through the schools. I participated in reading to fourth and fifth graders and enjoyed seeing their eyes light up when reading their favorite books. It was gratifying to watch them enjoy reading and encouraging them to continue reading to advance their vocabulary, spelling and writing skills.
