Research Experience
Abbvie, Inc - Ph.D. Student and Candidate
Oxford, MS, 01/2017 - 12/2021

I have been working on my thesis with my mentor (Dr. Jafri), which involves analyzing genetic variants published in previous research to discover their effect on protein structure and function to cause the phenotype appearance.

During my work, I gained the following computational skills:

  • Applied advanced machine learning methods on data mining and text mining.
  • Developed gene regulatory networks using NetworkX library in python
  • Used Tensorflow and Keras in developing machine learning method in text mining.
  • Analyzed gene regulatory networks using Boolean model.
  • Prepared and presented academic papers and abstracts.
  • Recorded and developed reports on data collected from studies.
  • Managed project timelines and coordinated research tasks.
  • Attended GMU conferences to present research orally.

I worked also with Dr. Don Seto and Dr. Patrick Gillevet in DNA assembly for human gut microbiome data from Saudi Arabia using Geneious software.

I worked also with Dr. Jeff Solka in analyzing high-throughput variant calling files (VCF) using VCF tools in Bioconductor in R

Georgetown University, Bioinformatic Program - Ms Student in Bioinformatics
City, STATE, 08/2015 - 12/2016

During my work, I gained the following computational skills:

  • R and python programming.
  • Introduced to protein structure editing and visualization using Chimera.
  • Gene regulatory network construction using Cytoscape.
  • Analyzed Bam and Sam files (high throughput genetic sequencing) using UCSC Genome Browser, Bam and Sam Bioinformatics online tools, and GATK tools.
  • Retrieve genomic data from the Geo Database.
  • Working on many Bioinformatics webtools such as Cosmic, SkateBase, ClustalW2, Chimera, PDB, Seatelseq, GENEMANIA, etc.

I worked with Dr. Nathan Edwards in Mass-Spec project to develop a script to analyze (mzxml) Mass-Spec files and visualize it.

I worked with Dr. Karen Ross in my final internship project on discovering what is the relationship between autism and calcium signaling. we used the text mining tool RLIMS-P and the phosphorylation database, iPTMnet to gather what are the phosphorylation sites of ITPR, the kinases that phosphorylating it, and create PPI network using Cytoscape.

King Abdulaziz University - Ms Student in Biochemistry
City, STATE, 01/2009 - 06/2012

During my study in Biochemistry, I took an internship in the genetic department in King Fahd Medical Research Center, and I gained the following skills:

  • Investigated nature, composition and expression of genes.
  • Designed, executed and documented scientific experiments for research purposes.
  • Worked closely with team members to deliver project requirements, develop solutions and meet deadlines.
  • DNA isolation/purification from human cellular culture.
  • DNA amplification by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR).
  • DNA size fragmentation by agarose gel electrophoresis.
  • DNA sequencing using Illumina next-generation sequencing.
King Fahd Medical Research Center - Statistical Analyst
City, STATE, 01/2004 - 05/2014
  • Helped researchers to statistically analyze their research data using SPSS software.
  • Provided a statistical analysis to the post graduate students’ research.
  • Interpreted sets of data and identified tends and relationships.
  • Extracted and organized raw data.
  • Managed data cleaning and quality evaluations.
  • Created graphs, charts, and tables to report on results of statistical analyses.
  • Applied statistical methods to solving problems in medical research.
