Work Experience
Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. - Mechanical Engineer
Knoxville, TN, 12/2018 - 03/2020
  • Designed mechanical and digital valving & control systems for Kohler Global Faucet New Product Development. Prepared sheet metal, brass forging and plastic injection molding fabrication CAD models and drawings using CREO.
  • Optimized Global Core Showering exposed valve installation with FEA, validated alternate designs with mechanical testing (Instron), identified root cause for failure, made engineering design changes that reduced max deflection by 90%.
  • Quantified bathroom valves' performance with extensive testing. Validated product qualification with ASTM and ASME standards. Analyzed and summarized test results with statistics, established aĀ performance index in Excel that enabled rapid comparison of future valve product test results systematically with multiple variables and thousands of data points.
  • Originated and developed an intelligent body spray with gesture control and music synchronizing massage (Filed for patents). Built electro-mechanical functional prototypes with Arduino, IR sensors, stepper motors, MOSFET and solenoid valves. Programmed control system, wired circuits and designed corresponding mechanical mechanisms.
  • Represented Kohler Co. at 2 STEM conferences and 1 major trade show. Served as technical support for marketing at KBIS 2020. Introduced showering and valving products to hundreds of distributors, showroom owners, and other clients.
  • Spoke at NPD TechForumĀ as keynote speaker. Inspired many colleagues to build digital prototypes with Arduino.
Viasat Inc. - Mechanical Engineer Intern
TN, State, 05/2017 - 12/2017
  • Coordinated a team of System, Electrical and Mechanical Engineers to improve a Spiral Tomography Radiation Therapy System in terms of targeted area treatment accuracy and Multi-Leaf Collimator service life.
  • Designed damper for pneumatic Multileaf Collimator. Built CAD models in Solidworks and optimized design with FEA.
  • Led the performance & endurance testing of a shock absorbing damper; Designed test procedure, experimented with new materials and mechanisms, identified causes of failure,Ā improved design accordingly.
  • Designed a data acquisition and analysis system with Arduino, Python, thermistor and pressure transducer that monitorsĀ systemĀ  pneumatic pressure and the trajectory of MLC leaves. Significantly increased design verification testing and data analysis efficiency.
Lohman Technologies - Hyper Innovation Project Intern
City, STATE, 06/2016 - 09/2016
  • Worked on the design and development of an FDA approved home handheld ECG monitor that can give diagnosis on atrial fibrillation. Collaborated with manufacturing engineering, human factor, FDA regulation, and electrical engineering team to optimize designs for functionalities, manufacturability and assembly.
  • Applied damage boundary principles in product design and packaging cost savings. Identified manufacturing methods and housing designs that reduced the manufacturing cost by about 20%.

Research Experience
University of Wisconsin-Madison Bone and Joint Biomechanics Lab
Research Assistant 09/10/2016 - 12/20/2017
Studied the effect of human activities, kinematics and tissue microstructure on bone mechanics and connective tissue degeneration disease. Worked on developing a new method that could predict bone fracture and calculate the strength of bones at any given location based on CT data. Generated workable 3D models (3D printing) of femur bones from cadaveric CT images using medical imaging software (Mimics, 3Matics). Designed, modeled (Solidworks) and machined (mill) customized fixture for mechanical testings. Performed FEA, 3-point bending, compressive testing (MTS) and digital image correlation (DIC) on femur models. Promoted the standardization of testing procedure and data processing protocol.
