In 2016, I landed a pretty average “high school” job at Baskin Robbins Ice Cream. This job gave me the basis of my work ethic; good customer service, how to stock and clean fast and efficiently, professionalism in conversing with fellow coworkers and in handling transactions. I was employed there for about a year and a half until I transitioned to a really fitting position as a Head Parkour Coach, coaching children and teenagers of all ages, all shapes and sizes, and all personalities. Patience, problem-solving, communication, and compassion are all just a few skills being a Head Coach has taught me. Others include:
Plan-Building & Flexibility
I designed daily, structural lesson plans to stay organized and on-task while at the same time staying flexible to the dynamics of large groups of children. I can stick to a schedule but be flexible to changes.
Creativity
You have to switch things up with kids often or they tend to get bored, so spending hours, even days thinking of new games and new approaches to teach are some things I found challenging, but enjoyable.
Problem-solving and Communication
Parkour has a lot of complex movements, teaching kids how move in a way they’ve never moved before was always part of the challenge.
Breaking down ideas and progressions as far as they go and communicating them in a a clear, understandable way, on a wavelength that any age could understand is a skill I’ll always carry with me.
Customer Service
Dealing with clients face-to-face on a daily basis, handling payment transactions, fielding questions about customer accounts, advertising and selling products and programs, and most of all, maintaining a personable, friendly, and high energy demeanor while handling clients are all rudimentary skills to me now.
In summary, working with kids is an incredible feat. Patience and persistence, flexibility and fluidity, empathy and rigidity, and communication and customer service are valuable skills I can offer to any job in any setting. That’s another thing we practice in parkour, versatility. I have a willingness to learn and a drive to succeed.
After this period of coaching parkour for about five years, I continued in the fitness and coaching realm and in December 2021, I became a certified Personal Trainer and Small Group instructor. Working with now what seemed like the other side of the age scale, middle-age adults to senior citizens. Interestingly, I found that working with seniors was much like working with kids in that one has to be able to break movements to their most simple, functional form for them to be able to move within their ability and comfort level. Being a small group instructor and personal trainer has furthered my adaptability and ability to think and make modifications and changes quick and on my feet.
Alongside this, I am also contracted out to be a Social Media Manager for our local workout gym. I manage three different platforms and am well-versed in creating a comprehensive plan on how and when to get the most retention and engagement from our target audience. This as allowed me to become a team-oriented Social Media Manager with 4-year background administering social media accounts. Creative and innovative professional with top skills in web content generation, customer preference analysis and strategy implementation. I am well-versed in corporate communication, sales support and branding. Exceptional writing, editing and interpersonal skills with internal and external audiences. Deadline-driven, tenacious and successful at thriving in high-pressure environments.
