As a fire safety officer my role and responsibilities are as follows:

·   Prevention: Fire prevention is a key component in the Fire Safety program. Prevention starts in the building stages of a healthcare facility.

·         Establish and maintain fire safety programs

·         Consistently comply with and enforce applicable laws and regulations and ensure facility adheres to Local, State and Federal Regulations

·         Strategically plan methods to achieve operational goals and targets

·         Collaborate routinely with department directors, managers and supervisors to correct problems, and improve safety and compliance.

·         Create/review/revise and manage policies and procedures

·         Assist with the operation of the Infection Control Risk Assessment (ICRA) program in coordination with Safety, Construction, and Infection Control personnel to prevent contamination of our buildings and harmful exposure to employees and patients during construction and renovation projects

·         Inspect construction sites for safety and compliance

·         Respond to incidents related to the Physical Environment and investigate safety issues as needed

·         Provide support and oversight for internal processes to comply with standards requiring  fire drills, fire alarm system testing, life safety inspections, and disaster exercises 

·         Work with Risk Management to notify CDPH of safety issues

·         Provide consultation to Directors and Managers who need guidance in safety practices

·         Participate in Environment of Care meetings

·   Education: Provide ongoing education and training for all staff. From hands-on fire extinguisher training to Safety Alerts.

·         Educate staff on state and federal statutes, rules and regulations

·         Interpret and communicate new or revised policies to staff

·         Encourage creative thinking, problem solving, and empowerment as part of the Safety team to improve morale and teamwork

·         Provide innovative training and education for all CRMC staff.

·         Serve as a consultant for disaster management

·   Inspections: Provides facility inspections to look for hazards in the workplace as well as how to prevent potential hazards.

·         Investigate, provide and submit information to Risk Department about special incidents, events and complaints.

·         Participate in facility surveys and inspections made by authorized governmental agencies and follow-up with corrective action plans for any deficiencies.

·         Initiate audit process to evaluate thoroughness of documentation and maintenance of facility standards.

·         Managed the ILSM process.

·         Participate in Haz Tours, including inspecting areas and educating staff.

·         Participate in Safe Starts with Risk Management to ensure a safe, working environment for new spaces.

·         Manage the Fresno Fire SIP program for each of our business occupancies

·         Conduct Risk assessments.

  • Guided the planning and achievement of goals and policy changes to create a safer environment in our facilities.
  • Piloted, designed and implemented training programs and initiatives which contributed to a 60% increase in productivity
