Speech language pathologists assist patients suffering from disorders, including Parkinson’s disease, brain injuries and a cleft palate. Speech therapists teach patients how to make certain sounds to regain some or all of their speaking capabilities. Treatment options are prescribed, and counseling is offered to family members.

A master’s degree in speech and language development is required. This degree needs to have been earned from an institution accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation. A license in your state is also required to work as a speech therapist.

Job Responsibilities

  • Develop treatment plans to assist patients with speech problems such as delayed language, inappropriate pitch, stuttering, swallowing disorders or harsh voice problems. Treatment plans should be based on your own assessments as well as recommendations from social workers, physicians and psychologists.
  • Assess patient needs and adjust treatments in accordance with patient progression.
  • Evaluate language, speech or hearing test results as well as medical information and barium swallow results to diagnose and develop a treatment plan for swallowing, fluency, language, speech and voice disorders.
  • Document information and write reports with details regarding patient billing, insurance, evaluations, progress, treatment and discharge of clients.
  • Develop school programs or activities for individuals and/or groups to deal with language, swallowing, behavior and speech problems.
  • Teach clients proper techniques for achieving more effective communication, such as lip reading, voice improvement and sign language.
  • Instruct patients on how to strengthen the muscles of the face, tongue and jaw to facilitate improved speech.
  • Refer clients when appropriate to additional educational or medical services.

Job Skills & Qualifications

Required:

  • Master’s in Speech Language Pathology
  • Current state speech and language pathologist license
  • Experience with Microsoft Suite
  • Capable of performing essential job functions

Preferred:

  • Experience with pediatric, autistic and developmentally disabled clients
