As the leading Electrician on board SSGN class submarines, I supervised and trained my division in electrical theory, operation, and maintenance of the electrical distribution system of a nuclear submarine.
Duties included, but not limited to:
- As the Electrical technical Subject Matter Expert I supervised and performed preventative and corrective maintenance on the following equipment: Ship Service Turbine Generators, Ship Service Motor Generators, Emergency Diesel Generator, motors and controllers, and various other electrical components.
- Supervisory responsibilities included equipment repair, work schedule planning, work assignment, turnover, and clarification of instructions, technical and operational training, performance evaluation, dispute resolution, recommendation of disciplinary actions as appropriate, and initiation of recognition for outstanding performance.
- Served as technical expert for meetings involving electrical, mechanical, and controls maintenance planning, safety issues, and process improvements.
- Planned emergency drills and conducted complex nuclear and ship operations briefings to Chief Staff Officers.
- Supervised and trained a 15 man division in electrical equipment operations, testing, troubleshooting, and use of electronic test equipment.
- Supervised personnel in the use of electronic schematics and diagrams.
- Planned work schedules, reviewed jobs in progress, resolved problems and provided estimates on project duration
and sequence and developed recommendations for process improvements.
- Estimated and evaluated manning needs for development of manning plans.
- Directed short notice new critical work requiring shifting of resources and adjustments of work schedules to
circumvent work stoppage and meet project deadlines.
- Used accounting procedures to maintain control of inventories, work flow, and work accomplished; estimated time and support required for repair of equipment; served as technical and supervisory liaison between work centers; implemented and administered a maintenance and repair program; prepared cycle and quarterly preventive maintenance schedules.
- Performed advanced emergency and undocumented troubleshooting on electrical generation and electrical distribution equipment, ensuring optimal operation and functionality of mission critical equipment.
As a qualified Engineering Watch Supervisor (EWS) and Engineering Duty Petty Officer (EDPO):
- Experienced with air (pneumatic), hydraulics, freshwater and seawater systems operations, maintenance and
isolations.
- Performed, supervised, trained and inspected isolations of AC, DC and battery electrical systems and
components, hydraulic, and mechanical, seawater and freshwater systems and components to establish safe work boundaries using ship’s prints and approved schematic diagrams.
- Familiar with electrical safety requirements for working aboard U.S. Navy ships and submarines including procedures and processes for working on energized systems and components.
- Understand and ensure compliance with Navy documentation for maintenance and tagouts.
- Inspected the ship at regular intervals to ensure work and testing in progress are being performed safely.
