The Longy Master of Arts in Teaching Program, based in Los Angeles, is a graduate degree with K-12 California single subject teaching credential that focuses on music pedagogy, performance and social justice.
During the Longy MAT Program's one-year hiatus, Monique led Longy's main campus social justice, community and education programs. Programs overseen were the Sistema Side-by-Side Program and Summer Academy Programs (collaboration between community students from El Sistema-inspired programs and graduate students), the Music as a Healing Art Program, Teaching Assistantship Program, Mind and Body Programs, and the Master of Arts in Teaching Program. Accomplishments include leading the application and approval process for accreditation by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education for Longy's new Master of Music in Music Education program with teaching licensure, which opened Fall 2020.
YOLA at HOLA, the second of five of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra's music education programs. Leadership responsibilities at the HOLA Music Program (YOLA at HOLA and HOLA Music Studios) included strategic and intentional leadership; liaising and collaborating with the LA Phil's YOLA education team; managing a team of 20 teaching artists and staff members; supporting 300 students and their families; restructuring the program to move towards musical excellence; strategic planning; shifting the program "culture” to maintain a positive atmosphere; developing student voice and leadership; managing and creating a cost-share budget; maintaining a sense of consistency and trust in the program despite major shifts.
Harmony Project is a youth program that provides music programming in Los Angeles. The Leimert Park Program was a predominantly jazz and funk program, serving 160 students in South LA. Responsibilities included liaising with parents and families; administratively supporting and coordinating 10 teaching artists; maintaining partnerships with performing arts centers, schools and a community center; and supporting students and families.
The MAT Program explores music education, with a focus on community development and culturally responsive teaching. Defining features of the program is its' emphasis on identity, culture and social change, and is based at the campus of the community youth organization, Heart of Los Angeles (HOLA).
The Sistema Fellows postgraduate program studied the model of the Venezuelan program, El Sistema, which uses music as a vehicle for social transformation. The goal of the Sistema program was to train 10 individuals each year who would be leaders in the El Sistema-inspired field, and who would make significant contributions to the field of youth development through the arts.
