Summary

Important Courses work

Some important courses that i took during my two years at Bmcc completing my associate in Human services are:

Human Services 101 (Introduction to Human Services and social work)

This introductory course offers an overview of the human services profession. It emphasizes human needs and social problems, provides an historical perspective of the development of the profession; and introduces students to professional values, ethical behavior, theories, knowledge and methods necessary for helping others.

Human Services 201 (Skills)

The course is designed to train students in the use of helping skills and techniques utilized in the field of human services. Some of the areas covered in the course include interviewing and counseling, making referrals, assessment, group process and behavioral techniques.

Human Services 213 (Child Welfare)

This course is a survey of child welfare as a field of Social Work practice. Course content includes the relationships of parents, children and society; the development of old and new governmental programs for children; the impact on the family of child welfare policies, and the future of child welfare programs in the United States.

Human services 301 (Field experiences in human services I)

Students are placed for one day per week in human service settings where they learn first-hand about agency structure and function, the activities of human service professionals, and the application of human service skills. It includes settings like community centers, hospitals, family service agencies, community residences for the developmentally disabled, senior citizen centers, homeless shelters, child psychiatry clinics, etc. A one hour weekly class session reinforces the agency experience through case presentations and group discussion.

Human Services 401 ( Field experiences in human services II )

This course follows the same format as HUM 301, Field Experience in Human Services I. Remaining in the same field placement, the student deepens his/her knowledge and strengthens his/her skills through continued practice and supervision.

Human Services 411 ( Social welfare and Policies)

This course will acquaint students with the social welfare system of the United States. An historical perspective helps to illuminate the evolution of current policies, programs and practices. Poverty in the U.S. is analyzed as well as the specific programs which have been developed to alleviate it. Cross-cultural approaches to social welfare are also examined.

Social Problems:

During this semester in my internship at “El Puente Leadership Center” I've faced some social problems like racism, discrimination, inequality, homelessness, substance abuse, and health care. In this program we interact with different people with different cultures, races, and point of view. To face all these social problems we teach them ( Children's and adolescents) that we are all the same no matter the color or if they are poor or not. We used to make little reunions or workshops to make them write down words that identify us as a community together and to treat everyone the same. We show them educational videos of what bullying is and how to help others that don't have the same opportunity as them. We also loved to help others by donating clothes and giving out free stuff like ( food, candy, face mask, clothes, halloween costume etc.) Is a wonderful pleasure to teach others how to help people in need. I had a great time learning new ways to help children understand social problems and teaching them that we are all the same.

I'm entering human services as a career because I would love to help others by improving their lives. I think it would give me the opportunity to help those people that are suffering. From this career I love that it gives me the chance to help people get back on their feet after experiencing a hard situation. I am also interested in human services because everyone matters. Human services is about assisting those who need it most. Everyone which also include those who are having difficult circumstances, deserves to live a fulfilling life and to have someone on their side willing to fight for them. These career of human services fill that role, making a difference on multiple levels. I hope to graduate to make my dreams come true and become a social worker.

I extremely love Human services as my career because it also teaches me different ways to help and work with people. I'm going to be able to help people. I like that in this particular career they have so many occupations. Human services occupations include jobs in the fields of social work, health care, psychiatry and other disciplines related to physical and mental health and well-being. Helping people find the resources they need to get back on their feet after a difficult situation helps me be a better person and gain more knowledge and experience in how to help them. In addition, I like these careers because in human services I can even save lives.

In this semester I have achieved so many things. Something that I have achieved this semester is learning different ways to work with people successfully. I gained a lot of experience during my internship at “El puente leadership” like learning ways to apply academic training to the real world as I observe trained professionals and practice skills. In my internship I also achieve different ways that allow me to work in different kinds of companies to see what environment works best for me. I have learned much throughout this course about myself as a helper. I realize that if I want to become a human service professional, I should be self-sufficient. Self-sufficiency enhances the individual's self-esteem. I realize that my clients should feel that they are understood. As a helper, I should demonstrate empathy and develop effective therapeutic assistance.

I have developed effective listening skills in order to provide high quality communication, addressing the needs of my clients. Within my role as a helper, it is not acceptable to give advice. I will be able to use the technique “reflection of feelings” in order to explain my clients their feelings and help them to find the right solution. In addition, I have improved my non-verbal communication skills, which help to better understand the problems of other people. I believe that human services management skills could help me to become a professional in the human services field. I achieve good communication skills, leadership skills, the ability to adapt to changing environments, honesty, self-confidence, patience, self-control, persistence, goal-orientation, responsibility and other skills. I have enough skills and abilities to demonstrate the best traits of my character as a helper. I believe that people should help one another. I am ready to devote my time and energy to helping other people improve their lives.

Some resources that I have found for me and my clients is a page which is called Khan academy and i love to use it with them because it has a lot of good information even for me. The kids at my program love it. Another resource that I have found for my clients is playtime because that would help my clients which are kids and adolescents to be occupied and it helps me to get to know them a little bit better.

.

Skills

Being patient and having communication is my number one skill that is important when it comes to working with kids. I really enjoy working with childrens because for me they represent the hope for a better future. My communication skills are strong, as are my work ethics, integrity and values.

-Good communication and listening skills.

-The ability to build and maintain a connection with adults and children.

-Calmness under pressure when dealing with challenging moments or behavior.

- A understanding of the challenges faced by the families I need to help.
