  • I had worked in fields since I was 8 years old
  • Family raised tobacco and was a year round job.
  • Helped to set plant beds to harvest tobacco from in order to plant with a setter.
  • Would tend to rows and hoe in between plants to keep grass and weeds from the fields.
  • Would spray tobacco with seven dust to help keep pest and worms off plants until they were to next level.
  • Next tobacco would grow what was called suckers so we had to get them off around the stem where the leaves were growing off each plant and then sucker oil them to keep them from coming back.
  • Next we would top the plants, to help the plants to grow bigger leaves and help it to survive better.
  • Next step to chop tobacco down and lay in rows. We would then have to spike the stalks and put on the tobacco sticks.
  • Next step loading tobacco on trailers and hauling to the barn to smoke until it was cured.
  • Last step before hauling to sale barn would be sitting in barns and stripping all leafs off stalks and culling together to take to sale in Jan or Feb for your reward and then we would start all over again each year.
  • I learned at an early age the value of work and what it takes to make a life for one’s self. My parents instilled that you work for what you want. I instilled the same in my children.
