- Make a list of your soft skills.
- Cover all five main soft skill categories: leadership, interpersonal, problem-solving, communication and personal traits.
- Develop stories for your most important soft skills using the STAR technique (situation, task, action and result). Include those stories in your cover letter.
Your cover letter is a perfect place to tell stories that illustrate your soft skills. You should write a new cover letter for every position. First, make a list of your soft skills, and make sure you cover the five main categories: leadership, interpersonal, problem-solving, communication and personal traits. Once you have a list, you can begin building your stories.
Stories should be short and personalized for the job you're seeking. Each one should speak to the employer's needs and pain points. Use the STAR method: present a situation, explain the task at hand and the action you took. Reveal the final result. These stories should be short (1–2 sentences) and straight to the point. Crisp, clean storytelling will keep the hiring manager interested.
