The way to accept a job offer is to:
- Thank the employer.
- Show your appreciation and enthusiasm, but don’t accept the offer on the spot.
- Be clear on the terms of the offer.
- Give yourself time to evaluate the offer calmly and objectively.
- Determine what you might be able to negotiate. Respond as timely as the circumstances allow.
Most employers understand that you might need a few days to review the offer in detail and discuss it with your spouse, partner or family. Most employers also expect you to have questions about the offer and might want to negotiate compensation, benefits or work arrangements. The important thing is to work within the employer's timeframe and agree to a time by which you will respond.
If you have multiple job offers, you may be able to ask for additional time so as to compare offers. It's okay to mention that you have other offers pending, but the purpose is to help speed up the process. Don’t try to play employers off each other or start a bidding war. They will see right through it and are not the ones who ultimately stand to lose from it.
