One tip is to include a salary range you would be comfortable with. Conduct research into what the position normally pays as well as what you currently make at the moment. Make sure the low end of the scale is still something you would be fine with. When determining the best salary, you should also consider what other benefits come with the position, such as health care and retirement packages.
You also want to make sure you mention you are flexible when discussing salary. Ultimately, you want to include a sentence such as, "Based on my research, my salary requirement would be in the $50,000 to $60,000 range. However, I would be more than happy to negotiate further based on the complete compensation package." Include all information related to your salary at the end of the cover letter.
