Additionally, this is a great opportunity to describe how passionate and excited you are about beginning your career. Cover letters are essentially a way for jobseekers to introduce themselves. Employers will understand that as a new grad you don’t have years and years of experience. They will be looking for someone who is enthusiastic about working for the company, displays knowledge of the company, and shows an eagerness to learn.
Here's an example of an approach to take in writing a cover letter: "I am interested in this role for many reasons. I see it as an amazing opportunity to get my feet wet with becoming a multi-skilled professional involved in major civil engineering projects. I'm eager to begin my career with a company whose reputation and core values I respect, and look forward to playing a part in delivering quality work to help grow the company’s reputation, client roster and bottom line."
If you did civil engineering work during your time as a student, such as serving as a research assistant, or perhaps being involved in an internship program, mention it. Try to be as specific as possible when outlining your qualifications so that your letter isn't a generic cover letter that anyone could write for any kind of job.
