Generally, an application letter stands on its own while a cover letter accompanies a resume. An application letter introduction should be fairly extensive and go more into your background because it functions more as a resume. However, a cover letter introduction is more basic and should simply introduce who you are as an employee.
Since an application letter serves as a resume, it should have a lot of information related to your skill set and work history. However, a cover letter should not contain any information already provided on your resume. It needs to be entirely unique, so you give the hiring manager new information. Hiring managers will inform you which letter they require, and now, you will be able to show you know the difference between an application and a cover letter.
