Volunteered weekly from March 2017 - March 2020 with this organization that helps children who have long stays in the hospital to stay up to date with school work and have age & developmental level appropriate play activities. V

Phoenix Area Collaborative Child Life Internships including 3 pediatric units within larger hospital, one out patient clinic and one pediatric hospice care center.

Individual & Unique Experiences from my Internship:

• Burn Unit - was able to learn & participate in culture around burns (e.g. no mirrors in rooms), execute intervention during bandage change (advocating for patient & distraction), work with interdisciplinary team to help patient reach goals
• Palliative, Hospice & Respice house - was able to organize child & family specific activities for new and life long diagnoses for children to learn and families to come together
• Experience in 2 separate ED of different trauma levels showing different policies & different interdisciplinary approaches
• Intern project was a book to prepare patients moving from a hospital to a rehabilitation center, focusing on important aspects that children would benefit from learning about before transitioning centers

In this practicum I shadowed two CCLS in an outpatient clinic setting.

Some main points of intervention:

• Weekly interdisciplinary Spina Bifida clinics (patients would come once a year) : guiding patients through learning new information (e.g. catheter self-insertion), distraction, comfort & education on blood draws, importance of healthy diet & activity, checking in on social emotional development of child
• Intervention for all clinic patients, regarding cast removal or pre/post surgery education on pins/wound care, lead activities for patients & siblings to normalize the environment
• Clinic received a diverse group of patients, such as neurotypical and neurodivergent, for life-long conditions or temporary ones, families who received government funded resources and privately insured, etc. allowing me to learn about & experience different family dynamics & situations
