Some examples of soft skills include communication skills like writing, active listening, eloquence and public speaking; leadership skills like guidance, coaching, mentorship and strategic planning; interpersonal skills like collaboration, team-building, negotiation and conflict resolution; analytical skills like problem-solving, reasoning, troubleshooting and testing; and personal traits like honesty, integrity, patience and sincerity.
The list above is by no means exhaustive. All soft skills have one thing in common: They help you fit into the modern workplace. Each skill typically falls into one of the five main categories: communication, leadership, interpersonal, analytical and personal traits. Every job seeker possesses at least a few skills in each of those categories.
Soft skills are so valuable because they help you get along with other people, and they're highly transferable between industries. A computer programmer with good communication skills, for example, can take this talent to virtually any industry. Or an accountant who is honest and thoughtful will be appreciated no matter where they are working.
