If you cannot list a previous job, then your resume should give greater focus to your skill set and education. You should also look for entry-level positions in your area because those hiring managers will not care as much if you have minimal work experience.
When it comes to references, you may not even have to provide them unless the hiring manager explicitly asks for them. In the event the employer does require references, you can probably find more than you realize. References do not necessarily have to be previous employers. They can be teachers or people you have volunteered with. When you apply for entry-level jobs, employers will expect these kinds of people to serve as your references.
