I volunteered at an orphanage in the city of Bangalore in India for physically and mentally disabled females ranging from the age of 2 months to 25 years old. I was closely working with three girls where I would dance in front of them or play all types of games with them which they would enjoy. I would seldom help them in their homework or teach them mathematics. But I would mostly draw with them as that was what they enjoyed most.
I developed a curriculum to help students explore the confluence between art and the environment. The curriculum was designed to help them experiment with various mediums such as acrylics, soft pastels, color pencils and poster paints through themes related to the environment. I also held auctions to sell the art pieces and used the proceeds to buy water purifiers for the students and their families.
I am a freshman at SAIC pursuing painting and sculpture. Art is the passion of my life. It defines me and has helped me uncover so many aspects of my personality and my entire being. I am extremely interested in sculpture, metalwork, painting and mixed media. I want to graduate SAIC as a holistic professional and human being ready to absorb and contribute my learnings back to the world of creativity.
I have been painting for a long time and my eager interest in sculpture and metalwork motivated me to take the Introduction to Sculpture as a class for my second semester at SAIC. I want to graduate SAIC with as much knowledge as I can gather from my peers and professors, and do as much as I can for the SAIC community. Being in this community has made me more dedicated to my artistic passion and helped me learn more about different types of practices, some that I even discovered for the first time.
I went to boarding school in India which gave me a deep perspective of life in a residence hall, it was both a challenge but equally a rewarding and life-shaping experience. In particular, it helped me understand how important communication and engagement with the community is in residence halls. It changed my perspective and is the key motivation for me to apply for the RA position. Everyone in a boarding school is extremely connected and I want people living in the residence halls to know each other and have more activities involving smaller groups of people perhaps according to their floors. I also want to get to know other Resident Advisors and learn as much as I can from their experience and help build a stronger interconnected residence life community with them.
I have always felt that communication is a very critical skill. I realized that it is essential to talk to people in the hallways and checking in on your residents as to how their semester is going and always reminding them that you are a resource they can reach out to whenever they want to help them feel more comfortable in the residence life environment. Moving to a large city like Chicago might be very different for many people. I would like to be a support on how to settle into the culture here. I would like to be the sounding board for my peers to make their life more comfortable and smooth sailing.
I am very passionate about learning different languages and cultures through nonconventional methods. Over the years I have enjoyed discovering the culture of Japan and Korea through their food, music and different streams of media. I realized that I have come to bond with other people at SAIC because of these interests.
I feel that as youth we have a deep responsibility to contribute back to the society and humanity that has groomed us to be what we are. I would like this to be my foundation where compassion, adjusting, and understanding become an important part of my approach towards life. Being actively involved in the social sector I feel that there is a lot for us to learn and do.
My RA is extremely approachable and I want to be like that to my residents to. I want them to be to talk to me freely not caring about which year they are in. I want to be more like a friend to them and make them comfortable in the Resident Halls. Some people who are new to residence life might have trouble adjusting living with new people. Hence, I want to make people feel comfortable living in a new environment by being as approachable as I can be. For that, I would need to talk to them and know more about the residents. It is also extremely important for me to help them out when they need someone or when they need advice on particular courses or teachers who are best for them. This would not only make SAIC more enjoyable but also a place they can discover their full potential. As an RA I want to be a pillar of strength and support for the residence life community and our school. I want to bring people closer to each other and develop deep everlasting bonds.
