Summary

The primary goal as an educator and coach is to make a lasting, positive impact in the lives of young men and women. You are given the responsibility to influence and impact the futures of every young person that you come into contact with in a positive light. As a coach, I believe that the most important aspect of the job is to teach young men and women that having good character, respect, and internal drive create success. Athletics encompass a small window in the overall picture in young people's lives, but it seems to be the window where the most impactful learning occurs. Billy Graham once said that, "A coach will impact more people in one year than the average person will in an entire lifetime." This is a statement that could not be more true. The privilege of being a coach should never be clouded by winning, money, or power, but be honored by watching young people develop and progress into something that they might have otherwise not become. Winning and losing is as much a part of life as playing the game, but doing the right things, working hard, having good character, and preparing for success is where the depth of coaching and playing comes in. Someone once asked me if I consider my program successful? I told them I wouldn't know that answer until a few years after those players graduated....the person did not understand until I explained. Success is affirmed when players become successful in life by applying the tools, character, and influences that their coaches showed them while they were playing. A successful program is a developer of community leaders, developers, and believers in something bigger than their own needs, but in the needs of helping others to be successful.
