Step 1: Writing Your Summary Statement

Because your summary statement is the first thing your employer will see, it needs to grab his or her attention. You want to start out with four to six lines that provide an overview of your experiences, two to three pertinent skills, and a couple personality traits. Most importantly, these skills and experiences should relate to the job for which you are applying. Our veterinary resume template for Word is a great place to look for ideas of where to begin.

Summary Statement Example 1:

• Large animal veterinarian with 5 years of experience
• 10 years of experience as a farrier
• Flexible and adaptive to change

Summary Statement Example 2:

• Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine with 4 years’ experience working at an equine center
• Experience at a spay/neuter clinic
• Ability to diagnose and treat a variety of diseases

Summary Statement Example 4:

I am a recent graduate of Auburn University Veterinary School where I maintained a 3.8 GPA. I performed spay/neuter surgeries for 2 years for CatNap, a volunteer feral cat project. I have working knowledge diagnosing diseases and determining treatment.

Step 2: Writing Your Skills Section

The skills section of your veterinary resume is a succinct list of proficiencies that pertain to the job at hand. It provides your employer with an easily digestible catalog of abilities that will make the reader want to call you in for an interview to discuss further. Here are some best practices:

• Keep it relevant. Experience with horses is not important to a strictly small animal vet.
• Connect skills to requirements laid out in the job description.
• You want the reader to get a clearer picture of your capabilities with just a glance.

You want to highlight skills that are relevant to the position.
Keep your list limited to your top five or six skills, and list expertise you can expound upon in an interview.

Step 3: Writing Your Work History Section

Your work history section should list past jobs in reverse chronological order. It is not necessary to go back more than 15-20 years unless there is a good reason. Be consistent in your presentation of dates and location. This is a great section to use strong action verbs, add metrics, and steal keywords from the job description. Here are some examples to use along with the veterinary resume template for Word.

• Milked herd of Holstein dairy cows
• Assessed milk production levels and check for mastitis
• Worked knowledge of the herd in order to detect any illness

• Assist in handling dogs for training
• Feed, water, and administer medication
• Maintain a sanitary environment

Coosa Valley Equestrian Hospital / 2006-2007 / Pell City, AL

• Fed, watered, hayed, and cleaned stalls of 30-60 horses daily
• Assisted veterinarian with handling horses needed to be treated for injury or illness
• Administered oral and topical medication

Great and Small Animal Hospital /2007-2016/ Columbiana, AL

• Conducted various surgeries on small and large animals
• Performed examinations to determine and diagnose diseases
• Provided emergency medical care to injured animals

Step 4: Writing Your Education Section

Educational institutions should be listed in reverse chronological order. You can also include certifications or licenses under this heading. Unless high school is your highest level of education, leave it out. If you are currently in school, write “in progress” or your anticipated year of graduation. Your education should be simple and concise. It is not necessary to include your GPA unless you are a recent graduate. The employer need only scan this section to know where you stand.
