A new report has found the market for people with design, creative arts and entertainment experience on their resume is beginning to see signs of economic recovery in California. The 2011 Otis Report on the Creative Economy of the Los Angeles Region said that the rate of employment in Los Angeles and Orange County is expected to grow by more than 4% over the next 4 years in the digital media, toy, entertainment, design, art gallery and performing arts industries. Alex Johnson, a 23-year-old illustration major at California State University, told the Daily Sundial that he feels confident in his ability to find work after graduation. "The running joke for art students is that you will graduate and never have a job," Johnson told the school's paper. "But people currently working on a degree will benefit from this growth, and they’ll probably be better off than people who have degrees now because they’ll have the most up-to-date education." According to the report, the entertainment industry accounts for 40% of all creative job employment in the Los Angeles area. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that job opportunities for all occupations within the entertainment industry are expected to grow by 15% through 2018. |
