A group of culinary students recently had the opportunity to visit the White House and meet with first lady Michelle Obama. According to a recent Associated Press report, the six students also met with the White House chef, executive pastry chef and social secretary. The group was reportedly on hand to review a dinner that was being planned for the president and the nation's governors. Mrs. Obama also reportedly told the students of her enthusiasm for regionally grown food. The students were from L'Academie de Cuisine in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Culinary training can open a wide variety of doors to your career. Some people go on to become chefs or own their own restaurants, others choose to see the world by working overseas or on cruise ships, and others work at institutions, local restaurants or other facilities. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts an 11 percent increase in demand for culinary workers of all kinds in the coming years, about as fast as average. A total of 351,000 such jobs are expected to be created in the coming years for this industry. |
