While much is made of the importance of resumes in the current economy, some people are emphasizing the importance of developing the right skills to have on your resume in the first place. A recent report from Cincinnati's WCPO-TV profiles Jeff Lefler, an unemployed document specialist who went back to school to complete a paralegal program and has also learned more about web design recently. Lefler told the newspaper that having such training in the first place could have helped save his job. "I decided to reinvent myself to make myself more valuable," he was quoted as saying in the report. With that in mind, it's importance to have new skills to build up your resume with. Some tips offered in the report include being willing to take on important projects and to be able to present a "30 second commercial" about your contributions to your company if the need ever presents itself. With competition fiercer than ever because of an unemployment rate that officially stands at 8.1 percent, job hunters may also benefit from having somebody such as a resume specialist or career coach review their qualifications. A separate report in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch notes that some workers are getting resume help from a committee started by a local group called Businesspeople Between Jobs. |
