A new report has found that professionals with computer experience on their resume still have a good chance of finding a job in the new year.

According to the report by Chicago-based Challenger, Gray and Christmas, the number of jobs lost at high-tech companies including those in the computer and telecommunications industries is at its lowest level since 1997, decreasing by 21% from 2010.
The report found that the strongest sectors that continued to make gains included computer system design and electronics manufacturing firms.

John A. Challenger, chief executive officer of Challenger, Gray & Christmas, said workers who have not kept up with changes in technology need to brush up on their skills in order to stay relevant.

"Those left behind who neglected to update their skills to keep up with the rapidly changing demands of the industry are undoubtedly struggling to find employment even as the sector continues to experience a strong recovery," Challenger added.

Data processing, hosting and related services saw the largest amount of job losses last year.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports professionals with advanced postsecondary degrees on their resume can earn $1,000 more per week than those with some or no college education.
