Working as a nurse can become more than a career and for some, it develops into a lifelong commitment to health and learning. Doris Graham Manos, who graduated as a nurse in 1944, said she has remained eternally grateful to her education and to the comments of her mother, also a nurse, who told her "it's something you'll use every day of your life", the Progress News said. She said she would recommend the profession because of its versatility and the diverse career paths it offers. After graduating through the US Cadet Nurse Corps, a government organization established to meet the need for nurses during World War II, Ms Manos went on to work in pediatrics and obstetrics. She also completed spells as a teacher for other nurses and as high school counselor. Anyone considering a career in nursing should shadow a professional, she said, in order to learn as much as they can about what the career really involves. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, registered nursing is the largest occupation within the healthcare sector. In 2006, there were around 2.5 million nursing jobs in the US and a further 587,000 posts are expected to be created in the profession by 2016. |
