Some health care careers require some of the highest standards of education and technical training around but the wide variety of jobs and settings in the sector as a whole means there are careers to suit almost any graduate.

And, according to J Michael Horsely of the Alabama Hospital Association, health care jobs are also among the fastest-growing professions in the United States, the Montgomery Advertiser reports.

"Hospital jobs are not only exciting, but they are rewarding and offer an endless variety of job settings," Mr Horsley said.

"There's truly a health care job for almost any type of person."

According to the US Department of Labor, seven of the top 20 fastest growing jobs are in the health care sector.

Careers in the field are largely divided into two areas - service occupations, such as nursing aides, home health aides and dental assistants, which require a qualifications but little specialist training and professional occupations, such as physicians, dentists, registered nurses and physical therapists.

These positions involve the diagnosis and treatment of patients and therefore require the highest standards of ethics and formal education.

Between 2006 and 2016, there are expected to be 3 million new jobs in the field of US health care.
