Georgia's Mercer University Eyes A Number of New Degree Programs

Officials at Mercer University in Georgia are hoping to add 2 new degree programs to the curriculum, including one that would be the first-of-its-kind ever offered in the U.S.

The Macon Telegraph reports that the school is awaiting approval by for a unique master of laws degree in federal criminal practice and procedure from the American Bar Association. If approved, students who add this degree to their resume will be able to pursue criminal justice careers as prosecutors, federal defenders or private defense counsel.

Meanwhile, the school is also waiting on approval by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools for its bachelor of musical arts degree program, which will focus on performance as well as a secondary area of study that includes business, economics, new media communications and arts management.

Both programs are expected to begin next fall.

The school is also planning to offer two other majors that do not require state approval including an interdisciplinary major in law and public policy, and a sports business management degree through the school of business and economics.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, professionals with an advanced degree on their resume can earn $1,000 more per week than those with some or no college education.
