For people who have been out of work for an extended amount of time due to the recession, relearning their positions may be a harder task than imagined. Although adult learning continues to grow in the higher education system, where many people are turning in order to train for a new job, other organizations are offering programs to help individuals get back into the working world. A new endowment of federal funding will help people enter a job retraining program geared towards white-collared individuals who lost their job, according to The Los Angeles Times. The program is backed by $415 million in stimulus funds, and will allow unemployed individuals to attend career retraining, such as the kind of curriculum offered by University of California - Los Angeles' (UCLA) extension program. Experts say it's the white collar workers who are especially affected. "Since the 1991 recession, you began to see more white-collar workers laid off than you had in previous recessions," Thomas Kochan, a professor of management at MIT's Sloan School of Management, told the news provider. "That's gotten more widespread with each one." According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, individuals who hold higher degrees have a better chance of gaining employment. |
