Career Counselors Make A Difference For Students

24 March 2009
Career counselors are an increasingly important part of a school system.
One local school career counselor has made a difference in the lives of many students while also serving as a leader in her chosen field.

This week, the Journal News newspaper of Ohio profiled Hamilton resident Zellene Miller, who serves as the local high school's first career development counselor. Miller reportedly comes from a business background, with two decades spent working for Diebold before beginning her education career.

"Career development is a process of helping students set goals for themselves while researching careers and colleges and becoming aware of what their interests and skills are," Miller told the newspaper, adding that community service is also an important component in her programs.

The newspaper added that 28 students are currently involved with Miller's program.

Nationwide, the Bureau of Labor Statistics work as school counselors, including educational and vocational counselors. The BLS reports that demand for them is expected to increase by 13 percent in the coming years, as part of a 21 percent increase in demand for counselors in general.
