These days, teachers' roles extend far beyond classroom instruction, with the opportunity to get involved in children's social and career development as well. Many secondary school educators take on many roles in their jobs, including building relationships with students' families, leading after-school clubs and organizations, and giving career guidance. Teacher Jane Weaver told the Acord that she enjoys "everything about being a teacher - spending the day with kids, creating lessons and developing friendships with parents". Because their responsibilities are not limited to teaching the basic subjects, teachers often find themselves viewed as role models by their students. Meanwhile, educator John Hallinan told the Daily Iowan that what he enjoys most about the job is that it's "an excuse to be the best person you can be". "Every day, you that chance to be a better person, to be a better teacher - and I like that challenge," he explained. Those who are interested in pursuing a career as a public secondary school teacher should obtain a bachelor's or master's degree in education, after which they will need to get licensed in their state. According to the most recent Department of Labor data, teachers hold around six million jobs and earn an average of $43,580 to $48,690 - though this figure may vary based on experience, employer and location. |
