Those chasing careers in education may need something extra to help them stand out from the crowd. This is because the teaching jobs sector in the US is currently highly competitive, tutor Dominic Manola told OakPark-Leaves.com. He told the news provider: "There's a lot of competition for teaching jobs - especially in (social studies). "You really need to do something to make yourself stand out." Mr Manola recently got a job at Leyden High School District 212, where more than 2,250 people applied for just 22 positions, according to assistant superintendent Bob Johnson. According to the Department of Labor's latest Ocupational Outlook Handbook for 2008-09, public sector teachers require a license to work, which usually involves having to obtain a bachelor's degree. The licensing itself can vary from state to state, with some programs set up specifically to attract teachers into "hard-to-fill positions". In general, "job prospects should be favorable", the document states. |
