The economy has put many people's jobs on the chopping block. However, one city in New York is offering teachers, who were laid off earlier this year to balance the budget, the chance to get their jobs back. Clarkstown school board members recently decided to use the new injection of federal funds to rehire 14 teachers and teacher assistants, who were earlier eliminated from the 2010-2011 school budget, according to Patch.com. Superintendent Margaret Keller-Cogan told the news source that the district will still have about $1.1 million left from the $1.4 million in new education aid to put into the next school year's budget. Board member Kevin Grogan explained that teachers and teacher assistants will be given the opportunity to return back to their jobs for this upcoming school year. "This is a win-win situation," said Grogan to the news provider. "It's good for the teachers. It's good for the students. It's good for the parents and the district. It's good for the quality of education in the district. It is good that we will be able to bring people back." According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of teachers is expected to increase by 13% through 2018. |
