 Education Initiative Praises Influential Teachers
Whether or not they realize the grandeur of their gestures, many teachers can change lives, shape job paths or clarify world views. Some of these professionals pursue degrees in education to realize the rewards of giving students skills they can independently use for the rest of their lives. A new program is giving students the chance to thank their mentors for the valuable lessons imparted over the years.

As part of the My Teacher, My Hero initiative, an online video message board will be open to the public for individuals to send their gratitude to an influential educator of their choosing.

"While we can't change the pay scale for our educators, My Teacher, My Hero seeks to change the perception of the profession by honoring the efforts and impact of teachers nationwide," said Jeremy Johnson, the program's founder.

The initiative has attracted support from celebrities, athletes, public officials and business leaders. To date, astronaut Buzz Aldrin, baseball Hall of Famer Dave Winfield, media personality Howard Stern, and Ford Motors CEO Alan Mullaly have contributed to the program.

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan estimated that 1.7 million new teaching jobs will be needed by 2017.
